Polish Space Agency ordered a feasibility study for the “Polish space awareness system architecture, with a particular emphasis placed on the subsystem for observing and tracking space objects”. The study has been ordered from the Astri Polska Sp. z o.o company and it is expected to be completed in July 2016. The agreement regarding the study above was signed on 11th March 2016, in presence of the POLSA President, professor Marek Banaszkiewicz, and POLSA Vice-President for Defence Issues, General Lech Majewski, by and between Col. Marek Malawski, Director of the POLSA Defence Projects Department and Marie Catherine Palau and Jacek Mandas, representing the Astri Polska Sp. z o.o company.

The main goal of the study is to define the possibilities and conditions for realization of the works related to Space Domain Awareness (SDA) / Space Situational Awareness (SSA) systems, with a particular emphasis placed on the subsystem for Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST), with the latter suite being created to fulfil the needs of the armed forces, security services, administrative crisis management and the Polish economy. The study is to define whether the project is feasible.

Secondly, analysis of alternative implementation paths is also required. According to the assumptions, options of implementation of the architecture, for a system synchronized together with systems used in other countries, shall also be described. Moreover, possible scenarios for achieving full operationability shall also be analysed. The feasibility study in question should also define the scope of scientific tasks for support of the system implementation which could be realized within the framework of the initiatives pursued by the Polish Space Agency and other institutions. The document shall additionally define the scope of tasks related to creation of the individual system components.

Polish Space Agency announced the competition, pertaining development of a feasibility study for this project on 26th November 2015. Offer placing deadline expired on 11th December 2015. Four offers were received by the Agency, in a response to the offer request sent to 20 entities.

This is the second study ordered by us throughout the last couple of months. The implementation of the studies is quite important, since they may provide us with valuable information regarding the condition and abilities of the Polish space sector. They may also constitute an introductory stage for realization of the projects that could support completion of relevant tasks for the Polish administration, economy, armed forces and security services.

General Lech Majewski, the Polish Space Agency’s Vice-President, dealing with the defence area.
