The Lithuanian Ministry of Defence has announced that it intends to increase its spending to a minimum of 5% of GDP. This is more than any other country in the Alliance spends. However, Vilnius considers this step necessary.

’A historic decision in Lithuania. The country has committed to increase defence spending to 5-6% of GDP, becoming a world leader in military investment. Between 2026 and 2030, this funding will strengthen operational capabilities and enable the faster creation of a national division« - communicated the ministry via X.

It may be recalled that a few weeks ago Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda stated that the state’s defence spending should be increased up to 5.5% of GDP. One of the reasons for this decision is the desire to form a new division, which is expected to reach readiness by 2030. The Lithuanian authorities emphasise that this is the best way to make the state and the region more secure.

It is worth noting that Lithuania is investing in both conventional weapons systems (e.g. Leopard 2 tanks and CV-90 IFVs, previously there were no capabilities of this class in the Lithuanian army) and new technologies such as FPV drones and circulating munitions. Vilnius is also developing an army based to some extent on conscription, but in order to achieve adequate capabilities in a short time such a large defence expenditure was deemed necessary.
